Nada today. The few kestrels we did see were still in family groups and were more interested in dive bombing the small flock of starlings.
LOTS of red tails before 11 am though. After 11 am and they seemed to have taken a lunch break elsewhere.
Four harriers, 6 ravens.
I threw the BC out at a couple of red tails who gave me a look of, "You have GOT to be kidding me, right?" and ignored it.
I also threw out the trap at a merlin, just to see if I could get it to hit. I'd have taken pictures and sent them to my sponsor before releasing it. My sponsor loves merlins. =)
Other than that, nothing. *sigh*

You seem to be discouraged by family groups, why is that? The bird I trapped this year was out of a family group. You've got a better chance of getting a passage bird that way and who knows, you may get two birds on the trap at the same time and have your pick! Good luck!
Thanks for posting. Yeah, I'm familiar with that "you have GOT to be kidding" look, although I get it when I'm trying to photograph right before my raptor model takes to flight. Most of the hawks I have met are lens-shy.

Hello Isobael -
Just checking in to see if you went trapping this weekend.
Sunday Janet and I watched an osprey macking down on a large fish on top of a street light at the beach.
There was a crow attempting to drive him off of it and it was amusing to see the oprey's disdain for his harasser. "You want it? Come and get it, punk, I dare you".

I saw three kestrels on my Sunday morning bicycle ride - come on down to San Diego!
